Advocate of the Month – June:

THE June ADVOCATEs OF THE MONTH are:

This June Advocate of the Month announcement is doubly exciting! Please help us congratulate a dynamic duo, a dream team, a winning combination…Virginia Box and Ashton Rideout!

Virginia and Ashton are two advocates who did not even know one another prior to taking their current case. But when a sibling group came in that was comprised of seven children in three different placements, CASA staff thought it would be prudent to assign more than one advocate. After all, seven children means that every aspect of advocacy is multiplied by seven. When they were presented with the case and the idea of being co-CASAs, Virginia and Ashton readily agreed. These ladies did not hesitate to commit to work as a team. This is Ashton’s first case and Virginia’s second case, but they operate as though they are both much more experienced and as though they have been collaborating for considerably longer.

It is beautiful to watch Virginia and Ashton divide their duties so that they equally carry the workload. They seamlessly take turns completing tasks. However, they are both knowledgeable about the case so that either one can answer questions and provide important information and updates to the associated parties and to the court.

Between them, Virginia and Ashton visit the children monthly, attend approximately 50% of parent visits, and have lunch with the children at school. They also maintain regular contact with case managers, attorneys, and the caregivers. Furthermore, Ashton and Virginia communicate with teachers to stay informed regarding the children’s progress in school. They also ensure that all their medical needs are met, including making certain the children receive any necessary prescriptions and therapy.

Ashton and Virginia have done a fantastic job of connecting with these kiddos. They engage in meaningful activities with them such as creating art, celebrating birthdays, playing outside with them, and attending school programs (even changing personal plans to do so). Things as simple as showing up with cupcakes for a birthday or running around outside together mean a great deal to children. Thankfully, these seven youngsters are experiencing these small, yet profoundly meaningful, moments because of the love and attention Virginia and Ashton are pouring into them.

Sharing a case with another advocate is not something all volunteers could do, and certainly not with the grace and flexibility that Ashton and Virginia have exhibited. Their partnership is a wonderful example of working in the best interest of children, and we are so very thankful for their dedication.
