Advocate of the Month – September:

THE SEPTEMBER ADVOCATE OF THE MONTH IS:

We are honored to recognize Shelley Thompson as our Advocate of the Month for September. Shelley embodies what it means to be a consistent, compassionate, and committed CASA volunteer. Her advocacy is not just a role, it’s a lifeline for the child she serves.

A recent moment captured the essence of Shelley’s impact: when her CASA child caught a worm while playing in the yard, he excitedly told his new foster mom, “I have to keep it until I can show Shelley.” A simple sentence, but one that speaks volumes. It’s a testament to the trust, stability, and sense of continuity Shelley has created in this young boy’s life —something he hasn’t had the luxury of experiencing.

This sweet 5-year-old has already endured multiple placement changes, none of which were his fault. Yet, with each move, his first question remains the same: “Does my CASA know I’m here yet?” or “When is my CASA coming?” Because he knows Shelley will show up. Every time. No matter where he is, she finds him. That unwavering presence has created an incredible bond, one that offers comfort and security in the midst of so much uncertainty.

Throughout the twists and turns of his case, new caregivers, new schools, new environments, Shelley has remained his constant. She works tirelessly to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks, and that each transition has the smallest possible impact on his emotional well-being.

Now, as supervised visits with his father begin, Shelley continues to stand firmly in his corner. She advocates for his needs to be prioritized, ensuring that visitation progresses at his pace, not anyone else’s. She attends visits when needed, helping the child feel safe, seen, and supported during these significant moments. Shelley does not shy away from difficult conversations or advocating with strength and courage, even when it means disagreeing with others involved in the case.

But Shelley’s dedication doesn’t stop there. She excels not only in her advocacy work but also in all the other vital responsibilities of a CASA including keeping thorough documentation, staying up to date with trainings.  She also volunteers for committees and supports CASA in countless other ways, always ready to serve her community and mission with her whole heart.

Shelley Thompson is the true embodiment of what it means to be a CASA: a voice for the voiceless, a steady hand in the storm, and a fierce protector of a child’s best interests. We are deeply grateful for her passion, her commitment, and the immeasurable difference she is making in the life of a child who now knows — no matter where he goes — Shelley will always be there.
