April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. During this month, raising community awareness is not only a moral imperative—it is a vital step in safeguarding the well-being of our most vulnerable citizens.
In the Federal fiscal year 2024, the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services confirmed 53,543 victims of child abuse or neglect in Texas. The impact of abuse and neglect has long-term personal, economic and social costs and prevention remains the best defense for children and families.
Awareness plays a key role in prevention. Informed communities are more likely to support policies, programs, and services that strengthen families, reduce risk factors, and provide early intervention. From parenting education to accessible mental health resources, collective action rooted in awareness leads to meaningful change.
“We must work together as a community to increase awareness about child abuse and contribute to promoting the social and emotional well-being of children and families in safe, stable, nurturing environments” shared Executive Director, Kimberly Weiser.
Throughout the month of April, CASA of Walker, San Jacinto, & Trinity Counties is on a mission to draw attention toward child abuse prevention. With Child Abuse Prevention Month flags proudly flying at their office, and blue pinwheels lining the street, CASA hopes to bring awareness to the cause. Blue pinwheels, the national symbol for child abuse prevention, are also on display at the Walker County Courthouse, San Jacinto County Courthouse, and a number of local churches and businesses.
Additionally, as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, CASA has been invited to serve as a guest storyteller in public libraries throughout the three counties served. On Tuesday, April 8th at 4:30 pm, CASA will be reading stories to the children and families at the Trinity Public Library, followed by Friday, April 11th at 10:30 am at the Coldspring Public Library, and Monday, April 28th at 5 pm at the Huntsville Public Library.
As you see pinwheels throughout town or join CASA in other prevention efforts, CASA encourages all to be reminded of the safe and great childhoods we want for all children! Ultimately, protecting children is a shared responsibility. By fostering a culture of vigilance, compassion, and accountability, we can work together to ensure every child grows up in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment.
CASA cannot continue its mission of having a trained court appointed special advocate (CASA) for every child that we serve without you. Check out how to get involved as a volunteer and support the mission of CASA at casaofwalkercounty.org
Child victims of abuse and neglect have suffered enough. This April, let us commit to being informed community members and stand together to make black and blue just colors in a crayon box.
